What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing medical art that has been used around the world for over 5,000 years and it is used in many Eastern countries including China, Japan, Korea, and India. It is a method whereby thread-like needles, heat or electrical stimulation are applied to very specific acupuncture points on the body. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory uses a very unique language to explain how acupuncture works. The body is viewed as having channels of energy that run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, which are called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to clean out and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in one of these rivers is like a dam that gets backed up. When this happens, illness and diseases occur. By needling very specific acupuncture points, the obstructions at the dams become unblocked and the regular flow through the meridians is reestablished.

The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the bodies own internal regulating system thus affecting every cell in our bodies.

Most people who have not experienced acupuncture will be amazed at how minimal the needle sensation is. Your experience of the treatment will be one of calm and peace. You may feel your energies moving and you may become sleepy. The needles are left in for 20 to 30 minutes and there is no pain or bleeding during that time. Many people feel a positive effect, physically or mentally, from the first treatment. Some will need more treatments to achieve results. This also depends on how chronic versus acute your problems are and on how willing you are to participate in the healing process by making some lifestyle and/or dietary changes.
