What is Pilates?

Pilates is a safe, effective and dynamic system of low-impact body conditioning exercise. Pilates helps to build core stability and improve posture. Classes focus on establishing core strength and muscle pattern retraining. Understanding how to release unnecessary tension and work efficiently are important parts of this process. The precise nature of Pilates exercise makes it a valuable part of recovery from injury and the pursuit of individual fitness goals. Pilates is a technique rather than a prescription and for this reason your teacher can tailor the class to suit your needs.

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s and first gained popularity among professional dancers because the method helped them avoid injury and develop strength without bulk. The popularity of Pilates has since spread to the general population, Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes, and rehabilitation specialists.

We offer Private, Duet, and Group Pilates.

Private and Duet Pilates are ideal for those who wish to have custom workouts or those in recovery from an injury. Private Pilates is a great way to ensure that your Pilates form and technique are in top shape.

At Core Health Spa we believe that individual attention is important, this is why we limit our group class to four people. This not only maximizes your workout potential but allows the instructor to give you the attention you deserve. Group classes are not suitable during pregnancy.

Yoga Class Descriptions

Zen Yoga
A relaxing and rejuvenating yoga that places emphasis on calming the mind and allowing it to align with the body. Increases mental awareness through mindful movement and utilizes deep stretching and power poses to gain awareness of even the most subtle muscles. Take this yoga off the mat to lead a more empowering lifestyle.

Soma Yoga
Slow, gentle, mindful movements work to relieve chronic tension patterns, and stimulate the bodies innate ability to self-correct to ease and efficiency and movement. From the ancient roots of Hatha Yoga and the modern wisdom of somatic movement education and brain research, this is great for those with injuries and seniors to regain mobility and relieve pain.

Hatha Yoga
Ha- means “sun” and -tha means “moon”, and is commonly translated as the yoga that brings union “of the pairs of opposites”. Focusing concentration on postures, strength, breath control, and relaxation, this is a strong practice done for purification and union of mind, body and soul. Mastering postures leads to strengthening of will and concentration, as well bringing health, energy, strength and tone to the body.

Sunrise Yoga
Invigorate the day by opening the mind and body with stretching, and the flow of the classic sun-salutation. Stimulate blood flow, rejuvenate organ systems, and center yourself to lead a calm, productive and energized day.

Yin Yoga (Restorative Yoga)
Focuses on relaxing the body in restful postures, and is a good balance for more active yoga and energetic exercise. Postures (typically seated) are held for 3-5 minutes to access the dense, fibrous ligaments, or connective tissue of the joints to stimulate circulation in less-flexible areas. Helps to lower heart rate, blood pressure, stimulate the immune system and keep the endocrine system operating healthily. This class also incorporates a long guided relaxation. Recommended for athletes and Yoga practitioners of all levels.
